The Badbury Churches Pet Service will be held in the Granary at Coleshill on Sunday July 12th at 5.00 pm. It will be a service of about 20 to 25 minutes, with a short talk, some prayers, a couple of hymns and a blessing of the animals. Everyone with pets is welcome.

Some of you have heard Manus Noble before, if not here at Stonevale, then perhaps at the Wigmore, Purcell Room, the Royal Festival Hall, Cardogan Hall etc. I really do not need to say anything more, this is a concert not to be missed, and I am really grateful to Manus for fitting us into his busy concert schedule. Seats will go quickly, so make sure you reserve one right away. If you want to have a taster, just go to www.manusnoble.com and listen to him. I am sure Manus will bring some of his CD’s along to buy, like last time...
Lynette Live at the Tithe is taking place at The Great Barn on Saturday 13th June. Entry to the events during the day is free and there will be a continuous programme of music and dancing. There will be story telling for children led by the well-known local children's author Neil Griffiths and a range of "hands-on" craft activities for children and adults. There will, of course, be a range of stalls and the usual food and drink outlets .
The evening concert features the world renowned Martyn Joseph as the headline act. Martyn is a really dynamic and passionate performer who is sure to provide a fitting climax to the day. He will be supported by Dave Ellis and Boo Howard, an accomplished duo from London. Tickets are £15 each and can be obtained in various ways: You can buy tickets at The Lighthouse Bookshop, High Street, Highworth and at the information point at Swindon Central Library or on line at www.wegottickets.co.uk. We do hope that Great Coxwell village folk will support this venture as you have in previous years. Chris & Derrick Beer Ray & Jay Mathews Well it has been nearly four months since we left Great Coxwell for our new life in Montner.
We arrived here just after the dreadful tragedies in Paris and we found an atmosphere of shock yet also a quiet determination to learn lessons, especially about the potential alienation of the Muslim community. Although we have been coming here for nearly twenty five years and we already had a house, it is very different making this our permanent home rather than just having a place for holidays. When the furniture and belongings arrived we were grateful for our large garage whilst we sorted through boxes and made decisions about stuff! Even though we thought we had done a lot of this before we left our old home it is amazing how much more complicated it is to merge two homes into one. The red tape can be a challenge as we work our way through the necessary paper work - an inevitable benefit is that our ability to communicate in the French language has increased significantly! We have thrived in the sunlight and the dry weather and loved the blossom in February on the mimosa and almond trees, the gorse covering the hillsides and flowers, also in our potager (allotment) we were picking salad and chard in January. Friends here have been very welcoming and supportive and we have enjoyed village events including a carnival, walks and picnics and Gill was recently a member of a team representing the village in a catalan skittles competition for the département (like UK county). As some of you know Gill was taken ill at the carnival so we have tested the French health system and been very impressed......quick, efficient, effective....she's fine now and we feel mightily pleased that it was all such a positive experience. Tosca, the recent canine addition to our family loves French life too....the freedom to walk anywhere - lack of traffic, barbed wire, stiles etc. She enjoys café life, meeting lots of dog positive people and friendly women vets in a nearby town. We loved welcoming our dear American friend Ellie and her sister Annie in April and look forward to more visitors in the summer, we have also discovered the joys of skyping, Facebook, long chats on the phone, newsletters from Great Coxwell and so feel very connected with our friends and family in the UK and USA. As we write, our bathroom is being totally renovated and we are grateful for another floor to escape to during the works, it will be great when it's finished next week, then it's down to us to do some decorating. Pots and windowboxes, including lots of herbs, are now flourishing and we are really enjoying carrying our produce home from the potager we share with a friend,the strawberries are gorgeous ! Last Sunday we went to a fabulous flamenco guitar and cello concert (a father son duet Pedro Soler and Gaspar Claus) and we are looking forward to many outdoor events over the next five months. Our overwhelming sense is that this is home and that we have made the right decision. We relish the peace, clean dry air, stunning countryside and the French way of life, it really is hard to explain how different it is but we know some of you who have travelled this way will understand and we hope this ''postcard'' paints an image for you all ? The annual Vicarage Garden Party in Great Coxwell will be held on Saturday July 4th, from 2.30 to 5.00 pm. For the last three years, we have been blessed with fine weather (but the afternoon will proceed whatever the weather conditions!). We are providing tea, coffee, soft drinks, and a goodly selection of cakes and savouries. There is no charge, but there will be a collecting bowl for donations to the Douglas and Helen House Hospice for Children and Young People in Oxford. All who live in Great Coxwell or have links with the village are very welcome. For any further information please contact David Williams at the Vicarage.
An evening in the Reading Room 4-7pm on 5th June to show what we are planning to do with Badbury Hill later this year. We intend to improve the car park and start charging to park, and create some permanent mountain bike and walking trails. I would like to hold an evening drop in event for anyone who would like to know more.Richard Henderson Coleshill estate
Our June meeting is an outing to Barnsley House and gardens. We will arrange transport and leave the village at 10 30. Huge thanks to all the villagers who worked so hard to make this such a success. We welcomed three new artists, two greenwood workers at the Great Barn and Sam Thulin in Peter's Barn. They all had very positive feedback from the visitors and are keen to come again next year.
Pam Smith ran the Coxwell Cafe. We owe her and all her helpers a massive thank you. They provided delicious coffees teas and lunches all five days Artweeks was open. Their excellent reputation ensured we had the best attendance yet - raising a massive £1938.83. This is the highest amount ever and will be split, after expenses, three ways with the Park, the Reading Room and the Church. .Jane Holmes and Sylvia Athawes ran the Plant Stall by the church and again raised a huge amount of money for village causes. Thank you so much to them and all their hard work. Lynette Stulting gave the proceeds from her Artweeks concert to the village. She very generously donated £100 and thanks are due to her and all the musicians who played. And lastly to Mike and Cathy Harris who let us take over Peter's Barn and looked after the artists so well with cups of tea and biscuits. We are lucky to have so many people willing to help make it such a vibrant, creative two weekends. |
