Remembrance Sunday - tomorrow

9/11/2024

The Act of Remembrance will take place at the War Memorial tomorrow at 12 noon as usual.

For those new to the village, this is because our vicar has to take a service in each of the four parishes in the benefice on this day.

Details of services are always displayed in the church porch, at the entrance to the churchyard and in the box in front of the Reading Room, as well as in the Parish Newsletter.

A new service sheet, detailing services over the Christmas period and up to the end of February, is now available in the church and in the usual places.  Please go in an collect one.

Pat Cook, Churchwarden

Work in the churchyard

4/11/2024

Renovation work in the churchyard

From the 4th November, for about 5 weeks, a contractor from the Vale will be repairing the collapsed wall between the churchyard and the Gould's garden.  There will be a 'welfare unit' positioned in the church car park which will drastically reduce the space.  They have promised to leave room for anyone to turn in Biddy and John's gateway.

The churchyard is going to look a mess whilst the works are going on, but it is only for a small period of time.  The Vale have promised that all will be cleared and tidied and left in decent order at the end of the works. The stake and rail fence will also be permanently removed once the works have completed, so I'm afraid all jokes about tethering horses will no longer apply!!  It will be so good to get the work done at last - it has taken more than 5 years!

Sebastian Mueller concert

22/9/2024

On Saturday, 28th of September at 7 pm, Sebastian Mueller is returning to Great Coxwell to give a violin and viola recital with Lynette.  Feel free to buy tickets at this link, or give a donation at the door as usual, but do let Lynette know if you are interested in coming, so she can reserve some seats.  All tickets sold, and donations, will go towards the artist's fee as well as the much needed church charity, to replace the roof.

If you have not heard Sebastian Mueller before, now is your chance, as he is more and more based in Vienna, and might not agree to come again.  He is a wonderful concert violinist and viola player and a very sought after teacher.  If you would like to see him teach, you can also attend his masterclass on Friday the 27th at the Amey Theatre, Abingdon School, where he will teach some of their more talented pupils. The masterclass is completely free but you can book tickets at this link:

Thanks so much,
Lynette

Upcoming dates at St Giles

3/9/2024

On Sunday at 10.30 we have our Harvest Festival.  Donations of flowers, fruit and veg, packets and tins to decorate the church will be very welcome on either Friday or Saturday morning.  The tins and packets will go to the Food Bank in Faringdon and the fresh fruit and veg will be very welcome towards lunches provided by the Baptist Church.

We hope you will all be able to come and help us celebrate the bounty we have here in the village.

Our next service on 22nd will be our postponed Songs of Praise, when we will be including our six or seven favourite hymns.

On 3rd October there is a talk at St Mary's Church, Buscot, by Roger Vlitos to raise funds towards needed repairs to that church.  Entitled 'The Story of Two Riverside Cousins', it tells the story of Buscot and Inglesham Churches.  Admission is £15 and can be paid on the door.

Over the next month or so, there will be three exciting concerts in the church.  The first on 14th September at 7pm is part of the Great Barn Festival and features Aleksei Demchenko and Lynette playing piano pieces for four hands.  On 28th September, also at 7pm, Sebastian Mueller returns to play violin accompanied by Lynette on the piano.  Next month on the 20th Derek de la Bernardie will give a cello recital at 4pm.

Below is the link for more information about these concerts, and to book your tickets, or feel free to reserve them with Lynette or pay at the door.

Some of the proceeds will go towards the artists' fees, and the rest of the money will go towards the Friends of St Giles Charity.
