The 1st April sees the start of a new WI Membership year and new members are very welcome to join.  Our meetings are held at 7:30pm in the Reading Room on the second Tuesday of every month except August. 

There is a varied programme with speakers covering topics from history,  nature, the local area and a quiz night.

We also arrange one trip per year.  It's a great way to meet new people in the village and socialise.

Invitation to WI talk 'The Battle of the Somme' 7.30pm 11 November, Reading Room 

You are cordially invited to come along to the next WI meeting for a talk by Tony Ferguson who will speak about the Battle of the Somme from the viewpoint of a fascinating veteran. (See details attached). The meeting is at 7.30pm on 11th November in the Reading Room. The WI thought that, as this is the time of year when we are remembering people who have fought in wars, this would be a topic of general interest. The speaker has given several talks for WI groups (amongst others) on this topic which were well received.

There is a limit on the number we can have in the Reading Room so do come early if you want a seat.

‘Summer Puds’ on Sunday 15th June (3.30pm – 6.00pm) at The Old Post Office, Great Coxwell

Great Coxwell Summer puds is back on Sunday 15th June at The Old Post Office 3:30 - 6:00. The tickets are £10 each and that gets you as much homemade pudding as you can eat, as well as a drink (various alcoholic and non-alcoholic choices available). To tempt you some of the delicious puddings on offer will be Trifle, Chocolate Cake, Lemon meringue pie, Tiramisu, Fruit Roulade - to name just a few.

Please bring a bit of extra cash with you on the day as there will be the usual raffle full of goodies and also a special raffle for the beautiful painting completed by Colin Davies in September’s WI meeting. There will also be the chance to buy some additional drinks.

To buy a ticket please either put cash or a cheque through my door at Winterbourne, or drop me a text (07779653744) and I can give you the bank details to do a transfer.

Last month the village Women's Institute planted a selection of bulbs near the telephone box. Keep an eye out for them in spring!

All the votes are in and have been counted and checked by the adjudicators, the results:

In joint first place were The Mad Hatter and Eeyore the Guard Donkey - both with 10 votes, and in third place was the Nautical Theme with 8 votes.

First prize was £50 and third prize was £25, well done and thank you to everyone who took part, helped out or supported the event.

... thanks to those wonderful scarecrow makers (28 plus some extras) and all the visitors to the village who made the effort to come along and do the trail.

Ticket sales were brisk, around 260 sold, 140 maps were handed out and there were 70 maps returned after the trail, a fantastic effort, and thanks to the volunteers at the Scarecrow Cafe many of them left full of baked potatoes, quiche, cake and tea.

We'll announce the winning scarecrow in the newsletter when the votes are all counted up.

This Sunday will see the inaugural Great Coxwell Scarecrow Trail - join the fun.

You can pick up a ticket and a map from Scarecrow HQ which will be set up on the grass in front of Manor Cottage (right next to the Phone Box Library), there's a raffle too so get your raffle tickets at the same time.

Use your map and follow the arrows in the village to find and identify all the scarecrows, then drop your completed map back at Scarecrow HQ Room for a chance to win one of the fantastic prizes listed below.

The Scarecrow Café will running in the Reading Room from 11am to 5pm serving food and drinks, so reward yourself after all your hard work hunting down the scarecrows.

The Great Coxwell Scarecrow Trail is rapidly approaching - put the date in your diary, Sunday October 24th 11am - 5pm and join in to support the event.

Thanks to all our fantastic scarecrow makers so far, you are brilliant - if anyone out there wants to join and make a scarecrow there is still time, email [email protected].

The Scarecrow Café @ the Reading Room will be serving lunches, cakes and teas to eat in or take away from 11 am.
